— What Is Shellac

From Seedlac to Finished Shellac

Shellac is produced from Seedlac through one of two methods — Hand Made, where skilled craftsmen stretch molten lac into thin sheets by hand, or Machine Made, where steam heat or industrial solvents are used to separate and process the lac at scale.

At our Khunti facility, we produce the full spectrum of Shellac grades under continuous technical supervision — from traditional buttonlac to ultra-refined dewaxed and bleached varieties — all exported under the trusted TOC brand.

01
Hand Made
Seedlac is fed through a cloth bag over a charcoal oven. The molten lac is hand-stretched into sheets 5’×4’ — a craft method producing the purest, most traditional Shellac grades.
02
Heat Process
Seedlac is melted by steam and forced through hydraulic filters. The molten lac is then roller-stretched into continuous sheets and broken into small, uniform flakes.

— Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Hand Made Shellac is produced by skilled craftsmen who hand-stretch molten lac into thin sheets over a charcoal oven — a traditional process that yields the purest, most characterful grades. Machine Made Shellac is produced at scale using either steam heat (Heat Process) or industrial solvents (Solvent Process), allowing tighter control over wax content and colour consistency.

Dewaxed Shellac has had its natural wax content removed through the solvent process. This matters because low-wax Shellac offers better clarity, improved adhesion, and is required for many pharmaceutical and food-grade applications where wax would interfere with the coating’s performance. Our dewaxed grades range from standard to Super Blonde with wax as low as 0.2%.

Dewaxed grades — particularly Lemon, Blonde, and Super Blonde — are most widely used in pharmaceutical applications due to their high purity and low wax content. Bleached Shellac is also used where a colourless, food-safe coating is required. We recommend contacting our exports team with your specific formulation requirements.

TOC Orange, Lemon, and Dewaxed grades are commonly used in food glazing and confectionery coatings. For strict food-grade compliance, we recommend specifying your regulatory requirements (EU, FDA, etc.) when enquiring so we can recommend the most appropriate grade and provide relevant documentation.

Finished Shellac is best stored in air-conditioned warehouses at 14–18°C. Proper cool storage prevents the flakes from blocking together, which is a particular risk during India’s hot season. We allow all Shellac to cool fully after stretching before transfer to storage.

Yes, absolutely. We regularly dispatch samples to prospective buyers for quality testing and approval. Simply contact Mr. Vivek Saraogi on WhatsApp (+91 98300 33277) or by email at vivek@tolaramshellac.com with the grade you require.
